Jacob Zuma's message to the SAMA's

This is a message from our President, Jacob Zuma to the South African Music Awards.

Fellow South Africans in the music industry. On behalf of government and indeed South Africans, let me congratulate you all on yet another important MTN South African Music Awards ceremony..

This occasion provides an opportunity for us to showcase and celebrate our diverse, colourful, artistic and very creative music industry. The annual awards ceremony enables us to celebrate our heritage and to better understand our culture through music, which expresses what we feel and what we think as people.

As we celebrate 20 years since the release of our icon, President Nelson Mandela, from prison, we also recall his teachings to us to reconcile, and make the Rainbow Nation concept a reality in this country. The music awards are yet another opportunity to unite our art forms and promote them in totality. Let me thank all music industry role players, who continue to play a meaningful role towards the betterment of the lives of our people and for their contribution towards social cohesion and national unity.

Let me reiterate my call to the music industry to work for unity within the industry. Unity will ensure progress and prosperity and will enable us as government to work faster and more effectively with the industry to assist the transformation, growth and development.

We will continue to work with you to end the ills affecting the industry, such as piracy. We must protect our music and heritage. We also must continue to work on issues such as copyright. This is ongoing work. Let me congratulate all the award winners and nominees this evening. Your hard work has paid off. Enjoy your evening. Enjoy the ceremony and remember that working together, we can do more.

Jacob G. Zuma
President of the Republic of South Africa
